The Right Hutch for Your New Pet

Did you understand that of all the guinea pig supplies you are going to require, the most important one for keeping your guinea pig healthy and happy revolves around your guinea hutch?

That’s right and the hutch is far and away the biggest investment you can make in terms of money spent on your new pet so you better be certain you do this properly so you can have a healthier and happier pet for years to come!

The first thing you should think about when picking a hutch is the size. Think about your pet for a moment here… guinea pigs are playful and love to run around. A little hutch means not much running and the running you are completing takes place within your toilet. This isn’t a pleasant thought for anyone.

I’m not implying that the guinea hutch has to be so big that it takes over a room, however, do be confident that you get one large enough for your pet to both hide (utilize as a cave) and run about (to get some exercise).

If you have the room, a 4′ x 4′ guinea cage would be great… but don’t go with one any smaller than 2 feet by 2 feet.  If you have more than one guinea, you want to stick with a bigger hutch. Keep in mind, if your guinea pig (just as with other pets) doesn’t have the ability to play and exercise, then you will have an overweight pet which can lead to health problems and depression.

When looking to purchase a hutch one other part you want to rembember is that the hutch has a solid bottom.  This is much better than a wired floor.  I’m sure you can come up with many reasons why a wired floor is not satisfactory for your guinea pig or the rest of the family. The most common form for a bottom in a guinea hutch is a plastic floor. This solid floor is a lot easier to clean and look after. Additionally, if you can purchase one that slides in and out with ease you will be a lot happier in the long run.

One thing that a lot of people do not consider as they are looking at hutches is the door. You are going to want to take notice to this detail and be certain that you (or the person with the biggest hand in your house) can get your hand in the hutch and be able to move around in the cage easily. You don’t want to be struggling when you need to get in there!

After your hutch is picked out, you need to choose what type of bedding you intend to utilize. I have used just about all types of bedding offered and hands down I would pick a product called Timothy Hay. This is extremely safe for your guinea pig and they love to play with the hay and will even consume it. As well as the bedding you are going to need to to consider buying some toys for your guinea. These will be places for him/her to hide and to play . You can get items such as balls, rocks, large PVC pipes, spinning wheels, etc. Get inventive and make your guinea pig hutch an exciting place for your cavy to play and sleep!
