An AED is a tiny , easily transportable machine that evaluates a person’s heart rhythm for any irregularities and, if sensible, instructs the trained help to deliver an electrical shock to the heart of an SCA sufferer. This shock ,called defibrillation, can enable the heart to reestablish a regular beat.
An Automated External Defibrillator employs voice prompts to advise the trained help. As soon as the equipment is started up , the trained help will be directed to place the two pads that come with the Automated External Defibrillator to the sufferer’s chest. When in position, the AED will commence monitoring the victim’s heart rhythm. If a “shockable” rhythm is recognized, the unit will charge itself and instruct the trained help to steer clear of the SCA victim and to push the shock button.
An AED is designed to teach rescuers specifically what to do , employing voice and visual prompts . Rescuers attach sticky electrode pads on the victim’s chest. Through these electrodes, the Automated External Defibrillator is programmed to automatically evaluate the electrical activity of the heart to conclude if a “shockable” rhythm is present .
Whether you suffer an SCA at home or in the Emergency Room of a hospital, defibrillation is THE treatment .
AED laws differ from state to state. Check to see what your state requires .
